Advanced Techniques: TAZ LOV2

TAZ LOV2

The TAZ LOV2 has a number of specialised characteristics that set it apart from other rope devices. For starters, it is both an EN rated descender and an EN rated fall arrest device. However, the real standout feature of the LOV2 is the unique ability to install the device on a loaded rope; this capability sets it apart from other devices and makes the LOV2 ideal for some very tricky rescue techniques.

Consider a horizontal rope static line, terminated at either end. A worker is in suspension, post fall, in the middle of this line. The LOV2 can be used to grab the static line at either end and if a mechanical advantage system (such as an AZTEK, SMC Advance Tech & Advance Tech Mate or Petzl JAG) connects the LOV2 to the anchor, the static line can be retracted and released at the anchor by unloading the segment of rope between the LOV2 and the anchor. If there is sufficient spare rope on the end of the static line, activating the LOV2 as a lowering device will now lower the worker to safe ground suspended on the loop. In this rescue there is no requirement for a rescuer to approach the casualty out along the static line; all the work is done at the anchor. This technique can also be undertaken extremely rapidly if the LOV2 and mechanical advantage are in-situ ready to go.
