Compact Self-Braking Descender

Descenders are designed to regulate friction and control an individual’s descent on a fixed rope, and the Petzl Rig is the ideal descender for work at height and rescue because it allows the user to take advantage of the force of gravity.  Designed specifically for rope access work, the Petzl Rig also allows a worker to position themselves at any point on the rope.

Features of the Petzl Rig include:

  • A handy safety gate on the moving side plate means the device does not need to be disconnected to install the rope, helping to prevent accidental dropping of the device and facilitating the passage of intermediate anchors
  • An auto-locking feature rotates the handle to the park position when released, locking the device for hands-free work. The automatic return system on the handle limits the risk of the device getting accidentally snagged
  • Once locked, slack in the rope can be taken up without having to manipulate the handle
  • A new stainless steel wear plate that reinforces the rope friction zone, improving durability
  • A pivoting cam which facilitates taking up the slack in the rope.  The Petzl Rig can also be used to make a reversible haul system, and for short ascents (in conjunction with a Petzl FootTape and a Petzl Ascension).

Feeling confused about which Petzl Descender to choose?  Take five minutes to read through our Petzl Descender Tech Tip, it lays out the differences between the Rig, I’D and I’D Evac.

The Rig is designed for experienced rope access workers. That is, there is no panic override feature as found in the Petzl I’D.
