SAR Tech Tip: Trauma Shears

Trauma Shears

Trauma shears are an inexpensive, yet incredibly useful tool for every rope access or wilderness rescue technician. Much safer than using a knife whilst in suspension or fall arrest, trauma shears are a great general utility tool to cut through rope, webbing and cable ties. Care should be taken when cutting loaded synthetic fibre ropes due to the stored energy in a tensioned rope – but this is no different to if you were using a safety knife. We’d prefer to see all rope professionals using trauma shears instead of knives because we feel that they are a safer option to keep nearby.

An essential item in any rescue or first aid setting, trauma shears, with their blunt fin-point safety tip prevent injury to the casualty when cutting off clothing or a harness. This is why they are used by health professionals including paramedics and ERT personnel.

Trauma shears, such as the Utility Scissors we supply, can be stored in the dedicated side slot of the CMC Pro Pocket behind the multitool slot, with independent retaining straps for each tool. The SAR Bleeding Control Kit contains a smaller pair of trauma shears for a go-to emergency trauma kit.
