Small diameter, static kernmantle cords such as Sterling’s PowerCord offer some unique rigging advantages over conventional 11mm rope. PowerCord is 5.9mm in diameter & has a Technora core instead of more standard nylon, which doubles its strength compared to standard 6.0mm accessory cords.
When rigged as either a ‘cordelette’ type multipoint focused anchor or as a two-part guy on a high directional (such as a ‘gin’ pole), PowerCord works extremely well. The picture to the right shows a SMC TerrAdaptor ‘Gin Pole’ rigged with two part Powercord guys (black cord).
PowerCord does save significantly on weight and bulk too; 50m of PowerCord weighs only 1.3kg compared to 5.6kg for a comparable length of 11mm HTP static rope. With due diligence & the right accessory devices, PowerCord can be rappelled on, used as a litter tagline or configured into a micro haul system.
